South Africa Schools

Recently we finished compiling the database for South Africa Schools. The website was developed using Drupal 6 and takes advantage of Google Maps to display maps to the schools, while it usesTaxonomy and Taxonomy Context to create the menus.

The South Africa Schools database that contains almost 30,000 entries is available to purchase from the website.

Drupal and RSS Feeds

Drupal is amazing in how it simplify things for developers. I’ve recently tried playing around with some RSS feed to post conversions, and ended up writing my own. As an example I set up http://www.freelancesoftwaredevelopment.co.za/. This module checks up on RSS feeds every 15 minutes and then updates the website automatically. This way you are able to automate the posting of new content to a site.

The site is still a work in progress, and is more there for a proof of concept than anything else. Things like making the descriptions of the RSS feed items display better is in the works.

Drupal and Subdomains

For a while now I’ve been toying with the idea to test out Drupal’s subdomain module. This allow you to create unlimited subdomains for your domain and link them to content. As an example you can have various content categories, and for each of those categories have a subdomain.

We launched it at http://www.greatblogsite.com/. One of the categories we have is Dog Training Tricks which then links to http://dog-training-tricks.greatblogsite.com/. This is great if you have a community site and you want to have each user have his or her own subdomain name.
